Guys with pre-emission trucks what are your typical breakdowns?

I run an ol B model. To be honest it’s been so long I don’t remember.

 

Thats the good thing about pre-emissios .. you can usually limp it in to fix it ..USUALLY..
The last time for me I can't even remember..
(Knock wood )I've always been lucky enough to Jerry rig anything to either get home or to a good shop
.. I do remember changing a rocker arm once in a feedlot's shop on my 3406b model .. that was years ago

 

That's a loaded question.

If you buy a 1995 truck and you put the key into it and start it and just start working you're going to be on the side of the road. No matter how pretty it looks.

When you have an older truck like that you can't think you're just going to buy it and use it. You need to go over that thing from front to back and bulletproof it the best that you can.

That's what keeps you off the side of the road.

 

Not broke down if its in your driveway. That's called maintenance.

 

This year just replaced my trans 1.6 mil miles thats it 07 c15

 

I had water pump fail at 1.2 mil, that's the only thing that put me on the side of the road.
Everything else just regular maintenance. Detroit is probably the cheapest to maintain. Injectors are $300 a piece, turbo $700, air compressor $700, fuel pump $250, water pump I believe $350.
All those things I changed after 1 mil miles

 

Not true, not even a little bit. That's exactly what I did with my truck, never left me on the side of the road for 2.5 years when a fresh new reman injector seized up. I know a dozen people who've done exactly that.

 

The only things that have put me down were a broken valve stem on a steer tire and a blown transmission in the last five years. I run a mid 90's KW. I've spent thousands upon thousands of dollars on it though and replace lots of things I don't like the looks of or just due to me not liking it's age.

As Dino mentioned, you really need to be on top of it pretty much daily to have any real faith in it. So many times I've caught electrical wiring, hose, suspension, seals and belt issues before they screwed me. Technically, this could apply to any truck regardless of age but the older they are the more attention they require.
