Miles you drive may give you around 60% or so…give or take…of the money you earn each week. The rest is activities. Every stop, drop, hook, load or unload, waiting for things, sleeping in the truck, etc…you get paid for all of it. And it adds up quickly.

Would you say the activities roughly compensate for the miles? I mean if you’re not getting any miles would you be making about the same due to activities? Reason I ask is I live in Mobile AL with a DC down the road in Irvington AL and I kinda ruled it out as a possibility because I cant see how anyone could get miles delivering to WMs around here. Tons of very small ones that are just in an absolute mess of traffic lights. But if they compensate for that I might reconsider.

You really have to change your mindset when working for WM. As stated many times, your compensation is a combination of miles and activities. While traditionally many, if not most companies pay their drivers only for the miles they drive...WM pays for miles AND every activity you do. So while the miles are great, often times it's the activities that will really pad your paycheck.

When I look at what I earn each week, I simply take what I've earned and either divide it by the miles I've driven, or divide by the hours I worked. That gives me a rough calculation of my true cpm or hourly wage.

This past week, I made roughly .80 cpm or $35.00 an hour.

If I were to total just miles, and only look at that number...then you'd be comparing that mileage total with regular OTR drivers. That simply doesn't translate to the way WM pays. Again, you have to look at what WM pays for the entire week of work, not just miles. When you do that, you see that WM pays very well.
