DEF For A Diesel Locomotive

Oh boy, cant wait till one of the dosers goes bad inside the def system and the locomotive de-rates to 5mph when crossing the middle of a town......

 

Cat has had DEF on their 797F haul truck for a few years now. Its not exactly a new concept running SCR on large displacement engines. I'm kind of suprised it hasn't happened earlier on locomotives.

Locomotives probably have a bit of an advantage over trucks and equipment. Less exposure to the elements, less vibration. Probably more room to make the components fit where heat won't melt wiring.

I believe Progress Rail is owned by Caterpillar as well.

 

Are these scr a little different since electricity is generated by the engine to drive the wheels vs how trucks use the engine and transmission to generate torque ?? Also how much idling does the average locomotive endure???
