I'm wondering if anybody has info on legally completing a split sleeper with a standard 10. I know the rules around 3-7 2-8 splits and don't mind it, but what's the rule on taking 2 or 3 hours off duty, running it as a split, but then completing a full 10 or more off-duty.

I can confirm that Samsara does not recognize a split as complete without the sleeper berth logged. Just want to get home. Not sleep in the truck sometimes.

The way I understand it, the short break can be either/or but the long break needs the sleeper berth time. You can’t split using all off duty time.

How far away do you live from where you park? Because I know how I’d handle it.

It's a long load time and they're 6 hours from the yard and I live 20 minutes from there. It always works out that they load long enough that I can't make it without the clock pause of a split. I had 3 hours to spare last time. It took 4 hours.

Do they have room for you to park? Can you log sleeper while you’re there and creep to a parking spot to finish out the 7 and then drive home and go off duty?

Nah. Small cross dock in NJ and they close at 5:30. It works if I just log sleeper berth when I get back so I figure I'll stick with that.

My understanding on the 3-7 or 2-8 split. You can pause the 14 with a 2 or 3 hour break. But for that pause to count, it has to be paired with the 8 or 7 hrs in the sleeper. So yes you can do what you ask but you must log that 7 or 8 hours in the sleeper as part of your 10 hours break.

Basically you can. If you cheat. Instead of logging off duty at home. Log sleeper. Then switch.

Obviously, but I try to limit that as much as I can. Can't get caught out for bad logging if you log it legal and do it legal.

I figure that sleeping in bed at home should be as good as sleeping in the sleeper.
