I just replaced differential oil on both of my axles. When I opened the valve that is on the side oil was pouring…so it looks like they put more than 4 gallons. I put 4 gallons as spec’ed …maybe I should open up the air valve on the top and top it off with 1 or 2 quarts per axle for good measure ?

Any diff I've ever encountered you just fill it until its level with the bottom of the level plug about halfway up the diff housing. That's with suspension aired up and parked on level ground as well.

The capacities are just a general guideline in my experience. Rarely have I seen a component take exactly what is specified.

Running with oil overfilled can be just as bad as running it low. Can sometimes create more heat as it takes more energy to cut through the excess fluid.

Oil level needs to be at the manufacturer specs
