I am looking at buying this 2009 Peterbilt 386 truck with 310,000 miles on it. Its in the next state over so I'm working off some internet pics. The guy couldn't tell me the model of Cummins engine. He thought it was an ISX "whose predecessor was the M11." Anybody here any good at Cummins engine identification? Would love to know which model engine this is. cummins engine ID.jpg

    Expert I’m not

But the ISX did not replace the it replaced the N14, the ISM replaced the M11.

Going by the valve cover I would say it is a ISM.

Check Cummins website they have pics and descriptions of the engines

Definitely does not look like an ISX. Probably an ISM like mentioned above.

It's definitely a ISM,Great engine as long as it has been well maintained. Especially oil! If that gets neglected over 20,000 miles unless synthetic was used, they eat themselves inside,I had 2 that did this, and switched to AMSOIL,and got 1.8 million at 30,000 intervals with wix synthetic oil filters.

guy doesnt know what engine in the truck and trying to sell it. I wouldnt believe anything about the truck the guy selling then. Anyhow, you can just get the last 6 of the vin and call any peterbilt and get the motor model and hp rating. Also, i guy on here will do it for you on the specs if you start a thread with the last 6 of the vin

so you have driven close to 3 million miles? you keep buying trucks and blowing up the same engine and buying the same due to a missed oil change at 20K? and then say its a great engine? I wouldnt trust your word on it. 1.8 million miles my arse

I should have worded that different ‍♂️ I had bought 2,one had 650,000 and the other with 400,000. They didn't last more than 200,000 miles, cause some ####### was cheap and didn't use good oil or change it ...Then I bought a 2006 that had 900,000 on it,before I bought it,I had a oil analysis done, came back excellent, that one I got just over 1.8 on that one. I do believe it was inframed, before I bought it,but no paperwork.

thank you for the helpful information, patriot trucker dan and don379. the seller did not speak english very well, so I'm not sure if it was so much that he didn't know his truck as much as we weren't communicating. but its a peterbilt 386 tandem axle daycab with 310,000 miles for $30k. I think it looks potentially like a good deal.
