Is my TND 720 still any good?

One thing I always liked about the Rand McNally GPS, you could look up a city and it would give you the corresponding page in the Rand McNally atlas. Maybe it even gives you the coordinates, I don’t remember.

As for the old unit, might as well give it a try. In my experience GPS units always seem to automatically self destruct after a few years, but that seems to be the case with everything in my life... lol, so maybe for me it’s just operator error. if you find it doesn’t work so well, you can stop at any truck stop along your route and buy a new one.

 

I had a 720 until it started shutting off occassionally and then more often, until it was shutting off several times an hour. My friend just replaced his for the same reason. On a side note your updated map is probably as accurate as the old gps map, even the brand new units have outdated maps after you update them. I think the new RM gps is junk.

 

Definitely get a new device. I made a big review on the newest RM gps over a year ago noting how horrible it was but they just pushed a massive software update a week ago and it has improved significantly. They fixed the navigation and a lot of the issues I was having. I’ll be updating my review once I get some quality time with the changes, so far so good. That was a very much needed update. New Rand McNally TND 85 (Huge Disappointment)

 

You get new map updates but not the new routing or UI as that is device specific.

 

It will work, roll with it till you get another one, then keep it as a backup, points of interest will be quite outdated. And it will of course be slower than a new device or even your phone.

Personally i would prefer the old ui, made more sense

 

I bought a Garmin 780 when they stopped supporting my TND 730. No problems with the Garmin. I liked the interface on the Rand better than the Garmin, but support means a lot to me. I still have my TND 730 as a backup.

 

Fire it up and see what it does. Personally I’m done with gps’s. Google maps did what I needed even though it’s not truck specific.
