Split sleeping question we’ve all been wondering

    Need a little help for clarification. California is filled with crazy drivers.

    got fatigued from south to north California. Pulled into a rest stop. Can I use a 8/2 or even 7/3 to reset my clock?

    so I have 3.5 hours of drive time left. When I wake up I drive for 3.5 hours, then sleeper birth the 8/2 portion, would that reset my hours so I can drive another 11? Or does that only occur with the consecutive 10 hours off duty? Still new to ELDs instead of cattle hauling

    Once you complete the SECOND portion of a split berth you get back all the time you USED BEFORE the FIRST portion.

    In your example, you would get back 7.5 hrs of drive time AFTER the second break.

    The most important thing is that if you get tired and sleepy, pull over and get some rest. Regardless. As for the split,,I think it is kind of funky myself. I still have problems figuring out what it is going to do to my 14 hour clock.
    My most common use of a split is basically to extend my 14 hour clock to make an appointment. Get there, or in the area, a few hours early, I'll go off duty. Once I've been off duty for 2 hours, my 14 hour clock will stop and reset itself to where it was when I started the off duty time. So, if I had 9 hours on my 14 when I initially stopped, it continues to count down for that 1st 2 hours. But, once I've been off duty 2 hours, then14 hour clock will freeze and go back to 9 hours. It'll stay at 9 hours until I either start up again or finish a full 10 hour break. Once it starts counting down again, it won't stop a 2nd time. If I go off duty, or sleeper berth a 2nd time after the initial 2 or more hours of off duty time, it doesn't matter how long I am off duty or sleeper berth, my 14 hour clock will run down.
    After I've finished and ready to do the second part of a split, I usually just take a full 10 at that point. The technicality is that I still have to show 7 or 8 hours, continuous, in sleeper berth or I'll have an HOS violation. It doesn't matter that I take a full 10, if it doesn't show that sleeper berth, even though it is part of the 10, it's considered a violation. If I only take the 7 or 8 hour sleeper berth, I'll get alot of my clock back, but not a full 11 and 14. Unfortunately, it remains fuzzy to me on exactly how much time I do get back. I usually get a significant amount, but not full clocks. One of the reasons I just usually take a full 10. After the sleeper berth portion, I just have to wait another 2 or 3 hours and I'll have my full clocks because I completed a full break.

    Main thing to remember. It's not a full 1p hour reset. You don't get fresh clocks

    The easiest way to understand splits is to just remember it's your last 2 shifts added together that have to meet the 11/14 rules.
