California Ag Pay Rules

This might be in the wrong place, if so mods please make it right.

I recently found out that California Ag pay rules are somewhat different than expected.

Was quoted double-time for OT by lying mega-farmer, but that's only on 7th day after 8 hours.

Time and a half after 10 each day or after 60 per week.

So the base rate matters a lot. You'll be getting 60 hours of it.

They do not have days off unless it rains and they can't harvest.

So if you consider this work, figure on 12-14 hour days and no days off for the duration 3-6 weeks.

The different crops overlap so when one is finished they may need drivers to finish another crop if you want more punishment.

During harvest times, several companies are all over Craigslist in the Sac Valley. As I stated elsewhere, Button has DFC's, and so does Morningstar, although I've heard that they don't care if someone puts tape over them because they need drivers. Both of those use a driver app which requires your SS number up front, which is illegal and bad security practice. That app will let you put 123456789 IIRC from other times applying with it.

Morningstar is Libertarian-owned so they don't stand over you; they give you work and you do it however you do it, but it's load pay and if you take a day off or mess around with breaks you lose money.

All in all, it reminds me of when the carnival came to town, lots of questionable people from out of state looking for traveling money. Most of the locals were great, I learned some things, it was laid back as far urgency, but would not ever do again.

 

They do when they tell me that they are going to do so. And are in California where it is the law.

I partly grew up on a farm, I get that it's a hard life and a gamble every year. The little guys are squeezed out now, sad to see abandoned farmhouses all through the midwest and some out there in California as well, just used as storage lots. I liked seeing all the pole lights out there when I was a kid and we were driving somewhere at night.

I think we've lost something corporatising ag. And part of that shows up when a man says what he'll pay you and then doesn't do it.
