I have a 2016 international Prostar. Voltage was going over 18v. Shop replaced alternator. Since than I've been having issues with low voltage now. Been in and outta shop last 3 weeks and no one can seem to find the issue but have replaced starter, batteries, connections, ext.
I have seen on a forum here that someone mentioned in the internationals there are 2 alternators used (200amp and 300amp) is this true?
Right now when driving it will go from 14.5 and down to lower than 10v. Will shut off as much electrical (radio, GPS, ext) and throw codes. I pull over put brakes on and high idle for few mins and will power back up. This will continue to happen. Sometimes every 5 mins sometimes will go 2hrs but then happen again.
Electrical is a real.#### and looking for any help please and thank you.

I have no idea where to start. Sounds like the shop has the"keep throwing parts at it" policy. Is this your truck or a company truck? If it is a company truck, let them use the above method. If you own the truck..... Find a new shop.

Check your grounds, all of them.
many shops will not check the grounds or clean contact points because they don’t understand how the charging system works.YardMule89 and 201 Thank this. -

I agree with the grounds, but you definitely wouldn't be the first person to get a bad alternator from the parts department. Many times no one looks at the part that was just replaced. Happened to a buddy a couple months ago and had to do two alternator swaps on the job site that day.
Anything smelling when this happens? -
I agree with the grounds check, but, the ECM does voltage regulation now, at least on most vehicles. The sense wire back to the ecm could be bad or the ecm could have issues.
Can we just go back to the good old days, when vehicles had and alternator, a rectifier, and a regulator, all separate?201 Thanks this. -
201 and Elroythekid Thank this.
