I know a few guys in Butner. They’re claiming 6 figures. Some run from Butner to another DC and back, multiple trips a day most times, and others run a sleeper and go out to the further DC’s. Then one of them delivers to multiple stores out towards one section of the state and comes back daily when empty. None of them have a M-F schedule but some of them eventually get worked around to having one day off on the weekend occasionally. They’re all claiming 6 digit incomes but they’re all working 60-65 or more hours a week and a lot a lot of weekends.

I’m intrigued by the grocery business, I’m in LTL and have never done anything different. If the hours weren’t so long and eternal weekends that seem inevitable I would go for it as I don’t live far from Butner. But working 12 or more hours a day just isn’t for me, give me 8 and let me skate.

I have heard from multiple folks I know there that the management at that facility caters to one certain group of people and if you aren’t in the clique determined by a certain physical attribute then you will be treated as a lesser human being by management and the clique.

You’re right about the hours being long in the grocery business. I just got home after yet another 13 hour day ( and it’s a Sunday). I was just at the Butner DC a couple of days ago on my way back from a run up to a Food Lion DC in Disputanta, Va. I’m based out of Salisbury, NC.

The drivers claims of six figures might be true, provided they are consistantly able to work some extra days, in addition to their scheduled hours, at least two or three times per month. Given our schedules, this is not always possible, however. Probably, a claim closer to about $90,000 would be more accurate.

I’m averaging about $1800.00 per week and I’m busting my hind end to do that. Given the amount of hours that we work, I wouldn’t make the claim that we are very well paid, but I’m not complaining either.

Like I’ve mentioned before, I’ve been through some really nasty layoffs in my working past and I never want to go through that again. Grocery would likely be the very last industry to go under; if it does, then it’s all over anyway.

There have been issues at my DC about favoritism in regards to who gets the best assigned runs. It is no secret that racism has been brought up by, ironically, both caucasian and african american drivers and complaints were made by both races to our HR department. Favoritism may or may not be a factor, but if so, I don’t get the feeling that it’s racially biased; more likely, it is more of a personal like or dislike by a dispatcher towards a driver as an individual. At least, that’s my gut feeling.

I understand that. I have been fortunate to have danced around the layoffs my entire LTL career, I started in the summer of 08 ironically enough and have never been laid off but we have definitely been through some lean lean times for sure, times where I had to really put in a lot of personal side work to make it. It seems like most of trucking is long hours no matter what sector it is, I finally got enough time in to bid on a run that’s 475 miles one way (Estes) that I can complete in less than 8 hours normally but I understand that’s a rarity in trucking all together. My dad put in 22 years driving at Winn Dixie when I was growing up and we didn’t see him as much as I wish we could, back when they were in Raleigh. If they were still there I’d more than likely be there. Trucking gives and takes away, such is life.

    Well said.
That is a great run that you’ve got there and I hope that you’re able to get that bid. Also, Estes is a really good company for LTL so it sounds like you’ve got a good thing going.
    Best of luck to you.

I luckily am able to hold it for this years bid cycle which lasts a year. I will admit it is getting boring as I’m 6 months into it but I know when I’m coming and going. I miss the variety of the extra board and city but with a young family this is my best Avenue for now.
