Hauling Containers at the ports?

The supply CHAIN problems are many.
Just like a CHAIN has many links.
Trucks are broke down and waiting for parts. New truck orders are being canceled or build dates are being pushed back.
Very few people are willing to work seven days a week fourteen hours a day for three weeks straight.
Those of us willing to drive get the load to a DC or warehouse are experiencing double the usually long load and unload times.
Less warehouse space due to just in time ordering.
Fewer warehouse workers due to government money for staying home.
Consumers buying extra because of shortages and inflation.
I do think it will get better when people have to spend all their money on heating their house.

we have enough trucks in this nation to move containers locally, most of what I see is the unions supporting workers at the ports who have always been very slow and continue to be slow no matter what the problems are outside the ports.

rail seems to get method of moving containers across the country. I just passing one rail yard on the way home this morning, they have no shortage of containers being off loaded from rail and a line of trucks being loaded for work. This has never ceased or slowed down from my daily drive to my office. The container storage place near my office is almost full, which is normal. Yesterday there were trucks lined up to get loaded and move those containers to their “last mile”.

what is the problem for many is access to the ports, in California CARB and the port authority has pretty much stepped pre-emission trucks from accessing the ports and California overall.

Then we have TWIC, which is another layer of be. TWIC is a failure, there is not one justification for it. it needs to go, it was a knee jerk reaction to 9/11 and like the tsa itself serves no purpose.

The same goes for the changes in the dot physical for the past 10 years with no uniform rules that companies have to follow, like if you have a physical that has more than a year left on it, it should be accepted when a driver gets a new job.

one lie that the media has been propagating is this idea we don’t have truckers under 21, which we do. They just can’t drive interstate and to me this needs to remain because of the insurance companies will raise the rates even more.


I have three warehouses near my home that are at 8% capacity … 8% and have been since the end of 2019. We don’t have a storage issue with other warehouses that were built in the last four years, like the ones in the northern suburbs which the last one I went to a couple weeks ago was just breaching 25% capacity.

There is zero chance WM will pimp it’s drivers and/or trucks out to haul containers from ports. As the OP stated, WM isn’t going to have it’s fleet drivers sitting at a port entry when the fleet is better used delivering to stores. Now WM may contract drivers from outside carriers to move WM inbound freight, but they’re not going to have the fleet do that.

 

Seen quite a few Walmart containers cruising down the PA tpike the past few weeks and they've all been pulled by contractors

 

When you're making this kind of money why worry, rush, & no chance of being fired. Keep up the great work guys. Where is a robot when you need one

Bet they don't have a problem filling their crane seats.

 

If there’s no chance WM would use company drivers to haul the containers out of ports, why is a northeast DC messaging all of their drivers to see who has TWIC cards to get in and out of ports? I know for a fact that they are looking at having company drivers haul containers. Don’t know if it’ll actually happen but they are looking into it.

And whoever thinks you can work 7 days a week for 14 hrs a day, 3 weeks straight better learn some basic math skills and learn the HOS. Impossible to do legally, never mind as a WM driver lol. But it was a good laugh reading that.
