I haven't watched yet, trying to catch up, but looks like he built a really big post style vise like smith's use. Same kind of design but much larger, and I don't have a post that big.
What if it Snows?

I just meant the mechanics of the design, with the way the jaws are set and the holding powerDave_in_AZ, Dale thompson, Cattleman84 and 2 others Thank this.

I have now watched the video, that's cool. Did he mention how far the jaws open, I mean a vice that size you'd think huge...everything else is. PS except the steering wheel.
Sorry PPS since you brought up vices and I mentioned the post ones that smith's use...do happen to know anybody getting rid of 1, I haven't had much luck my area.
So how many people are looking up post vise?Rideandrepair, Dave_in_AZ, Dale thompson and 3 others Thank this. -

Hmmm... Even more ideas.
Its not a perfect build, but not to shabby. I can already see many improvements that could be done. I would make it a gear lathe, meaning the headstock would contain a gearbox to drive the chuck. The auto feed could also be driven via the gearbox.
The biggest advantage to a gear lathe is torque, and being able to select different and precise RPMs. It also enables the ability to control auto feed speed in direct relation to RPM.
I would also use a heavy wall seamless pipe for a thu-bore instead of a solid shaft for the main shaft.Eldiablo, Rideandrepair, LoSt_AgAiN and 5 others Thank this. -
Havent watched the whole of it yet. Some interesting areas that he fudges. Not one calibrated tool, leaves me wondering about the accuracy

Believe he said $40 per night they are out.Eldiablo, Rideandrepair, LoSt_AgAiN and 1 other person Thank this.

Oh I'm sure there is a butt ton of slop and run out. But for most small DIY projects I'm sure it would do a very good job. Not something I would want to make parts for a paying customer with, but I would be perfectly fine doing 90% of my own projects on it.
Edit: If I were to build one in this fashion I would also be much more precise with things such as hole location, square, and level.Eldiablo, Rideandrepair, JolliRoger and 5 others Thank this.
