Most of you know that I was pretty much tired of OTR LTL and it was time to move on. So I took a page from the SSB book of trucking and went back to a company I had worked for in the past. It sure as heck wasn’t going to be Creep Carrier but I did decide to revisit Cardinal Logistics. I worked for Cardinal back in 2008-2010 in So Cal on their Walmart Produce Account in Riverside. I have always said it was the best company I ever quit. I only quit because I was going through a very nasty and expensive divorce. I moved to Arizona to avoid the opportunities of running into my ex and ending up in prison.
So I went to their website and they had a job listed in the Bristol Tennessee area. I applied for this job and was called by a recruiter who said that they had been filled but would I be interested in a position in Shelbyville Kentucky? I would be home on weekends. That is pretty much when I was home anyways so I applied.. got a call from the account manager and he tells me that the job is hauling pre loaded trailers of aluminum ingots (long rods) to extruding companies in Ky, TN, MI, IN Western Ohio and maybe Georgia if they get the account there. Drop in their yard and return with either an empty trailer or a trailer with scrap in it. Done. No live loading, no live unloading and No brokers! Sometimes we just meet up with a local driver and swap trailers and come back.
When it’s time to go home you will either take a load back, we have two accounts in the Bristol area, or just drive home. So I asked him if we bobtailed home and he said no you take your rental car home. So I’m thinking it’s going to be an expensive job if I have to rent a car to go home on the weekends. But, no, he tells me that the company provides me with a rental car that I either renew or change out every week at Enterprise. I use the car during the week. There are 3 of us here that live in the Bristol area and we each have our own car. And, we don’t have to live in the truck. We have a company provided room at the Shelbyville Best Western not far from the yard.
There is no cpm pay, it is a salary position for the most part. Five day work week, average is $93k a year.
Sounded good to me, so here I am sitting in my hotel room in Kentucky. All of the orientation is done on line. I’m waiting to go over and get my Zebra Unit, some kind of hand held Omnitracs device, and learn how to use it. I’m already on the payroll so I’m getting paid. Probably get my first load tomorrow. We shall see.
Full benefits in 30 days. Friday was my first day as an employee and my bennies start on November 26th.
This is pretty much all I know for now. We have 11 drivers on the account. 5 live here in Shelbyville, 2 live in Bristol and work only in that area, 3 of us here in the hotel and one guy in Michigan local. More to come as the account gets larger. There is also a Ryder side to this account but we are not involved in it.
So it begins. Should be my last job before I retire. They got this account in May and it’s a five year contract.
I will update as I learn more.

@Bumper, didn't you use to work for Poly? I have a friend in Knoxville (he was my trainer at May 10 years ago). He's been a local fuel hauler up there for years, but he just went to work for Poly a month ago.
