I’m having trouble sitting with the DMV study guide picking out what would be important to retain for the test and what may not. I find myself finishing a section and feeling like “What did I just read???”
Any tips for working through the book or Utube videos you recommend?
My local community college started a new commercial drivers training course but the written portion only is eight weeks. I feel like I could prepare independently in much less time. Anyone take the written on their own outside of school?Thank you!

There are practice tests on this site that work pretty well for testing. I used them to add my Hazmat endorsement recently and they were nearly identical to the test at the Maryland MVA. I took the written and the driving tests without any help from any school...but that was back in 1988. The rules have changed a lot since then. :)

The written tests really aren't all that difficult, get the study manuals from your DMV and work through them, use free practice tests and you should be past all of them in a couple of weeks. Then go to a school for the performance training. Spending eight weeks on the written tests is insane.

There are lots of videos on Utube going through the pre trip inspection, I would recommend viewing some of those to help get some perspective.

^^^This. The pretrip is the only part I would recommend sweating.

I mean yeah you want to be prepared for the written tests but the pre-trip, you want to have it nailed solid and this advice to check out YouTube videos is really solid advice.

don't study for long periods of time. study for about 10 minutes, go away, come back after say about 10 minutes, then study again...wash, rinse, repeat.

trying to cram all information at one time makes you forget what you read.

this is what i taught my students to do, and they passed thier tests every time.

There's an app for that (Apple version). Hundreds of questions from actual DMV tests with the correct answers. About 85% of the questions (and answers) on the DMV test are WORD FOR WORD the same as the app. There's a review mode where it shows you the correct answer as soon as you answer and a test mode that shows your score when you're done with the test and lets you review the ones you missed. When you can consistently score > 95% on the app it's time to go to the DMV. Took me less than a week. Never read the DMV book. First to finish the test AND got the highest score in my class.

the most important thing the o/p needs to know, is that nearly all DMV test sites, "rotate" the questions so that no one memorizes everything.

one can study well past the time the cows come home, but the DMV will not only include a extra choice in the multiple choice questions, but also re-word some questions as well.

i know this is how many of the New England states test.

Just read it a few times you’ll be surprised how much you remember when you go take the test
