It’s funny how different people’s brains work. Usually I see the “new” and “modern” as a threat, especially if if what it’s supposed to have replaced is still good.

Be a good start on a truck like I want. Doubtful to ever find a 1960s Ford F250 4x4 manual, lifted, in perfect shape. Have kicked around the idea for a few years, even rougher than that, and can tinker on it.

I think a question of "what is quality" that need to be addressed.

One of my concerns within my quality spectrum is maintenance and repairs.

Many modern designs are generally not repairable and the longevity has been reduced to satisfy the corporate accountants. I try to look at "what is this going to cost me over 20 to 40 years?"

Using washing machines as an example: Our parents and grandparents expected to get 20 to 30 years out of machine and would get rid of it because they couldn't stand the avocado green or burnt yellow. Now folks seem to think it's o.k to get a new washer when they break every couple of years. Parts to fix it may not be available combined with they can't stand to be down long enough to get parts. So they buy a new one. For me the "water savings" of a new style over an old style is not important cause I am privileged and my place has a well. Also don't want to get my place damaged if a door seal fails on a front loader. Friends had a front loader that stank and caused their cloths to stink because it was located where the could not leave the door open to dry out and was constantly getting moldy.

Sounds like Dave is relying on his tradespeople to use the stuff that is proven to work well and has appropriate lifespan in the area. They don't want him to call them back out to fix stuff that was not done correctly the first time.

Would like to clarify something, if you were of the mindset that I was at a mall, or anything like that. I'm not the type of person who does that.
Already living in the country side, I headed further from the city. There was a sawmill that I used to haul logs to, it closed. Wanting to see what was left, drove out there, and looked around. Nobody lives within miles of the closed mill, nobody was around, but that huge parking lot was telling me to have fun, so I did.
If you search for Isle Pierre sawmill in BC, you can find more information on it. There is not much left, end of another era.
