Eaton rear end gear swap

    My truck currently has Eaton ds38 rear ends with 3.70 gears but I’m in the process of working out the details to swap my air ride for a walking beam setup that has Eaton 401 rears installed. They have 4.33 gears which won’t work for me, but I’m curious what are the chances I can swap my 3rd members into the walking beam housings?

    IIRC the bolt pattern on the hubs where the axles bolt on are different. I’ve been told that the the 380 housing won’t accept the newer axles (which is opposite of your problem). The 3rd member will bolt to the new (to you) housings but you might have to swap wheel ends (hubs) as well. Your question has me digging into 20 years ago memory LOL!

    ETA: I don’t think the splines on the shafts are the same either.

    I did attempt to dig this information up, and I believe the axle shaft splines are different but I was okay with transferring my 3rd member and shafts together. I believe I’ve got an extra gasket laying around so I will try to check the axle end bolt pattern tomorrow. Thanks!

    Me and my buddy just swapped my 38s over to 40s was a direct swap, axles worked. So doing the opposite may work also.
