FYI, I haven't worked since earlier this year but will be back by first of 2022.
How long do I have before I'm in deep doodoo with LA and/or FMCSA/DOT.
Called LA DMV and was told just to bring it in once I get it renewed but I didn't discuss how long it had been expired and when I was planning to go back.
Company will pay for it when I start back but if I'm in a crunch here I guess I'll just go next week and pay for it myself.

Go get a DOT Physical today. Less than $100 at most urgent care centers. Take it to DMV and get it on file. Easy peasy.

Somebody correct me if I am wrong but, AFAIK, there is no hurry to get it if you're not back working yet. Your CDL (class A) has probably been canceled & reverted back to a class D already, but AFAIK that's all that happens. When you get ready to go back to work, let your company know & (per your statement above) your company will pay for a DOT physical & your license will be re-instated to a class A. No point in you jumping the gun & paying out of pocket.
There is no penalty or violation etc involved in this AFAIK.

I am sure that people get sick or have long term health issues and leave of absences for months without issues when a DOT physical runs out.

Again, if I am wrong, someone please correct me.

self certify to retain your driving privileges.

    I did ,when I retired.

can drive intrastate only, if I decide to go back in.

just go into the DMV and fill out a form, in NC.

I pay for my own. I won't go near Concentra, or any company that would send me there!

    TheIncredibleBulk and snowman1980 Thank this.

Self Certify as using CDL for one of the options that doesn't require a Medical Card. Like @Numb said there is an intrastate option. If LA had reverted your CDL to a car license they likely would have sent you a letter. You should search for a LA webpage where you can check your CDL status.
