Hi everyone.
99 Volvo with Cummins N14 celect plus
In the morning, the truck has issues starting.
Overnight, it seems like the fuel is sucked back into the tanks and unless I take off fuel filter and fill it up all the way, it won’t start. BUT, if I leave the fuel caps unscrewed over night, it fires right up in the morning. I checked the fuel tank vent, and both seem to be working just fine, letting air go through with ease when blowing through it. I’m completely lost as to what to do.
If I don’t leave the fuel caps unscrewed, the truck will start for 5 seconds and then stall and I have to refill the filters in order to get it going.
Any suggestions?
I have a smaller filter installed as well in the fuel line before it enters the block. And I’m completely lost as to what to do.

Have you tried a different brand of fuel filter? My truck starts very hard with certain brands. I guess it's because of that rubber gasket on top of the filter not sealing well enough

What type of fuel filter, Davco or spin on?
You should have a check valve to prevent bleed back. This valve is mounted in the fuel output of the cooling plate mounted behind the ECM.Dino soar and blairandgretchen Thank this. -
It’s a spin on filter, fleet guard, FF1000, FS105. I’ve been using them since I got the truck for the last 4 years.
I’ll look into the check valve. Do you know if I need to take the ECU off to access it?jamespmack Thanks this. -

Some not all Davcos have a check valve. Some not all N14 cooler plates have a check valve that looks like a fitting but comes apart. There is a small filter in top of pump under round plug that can hold junk.
I would consider putting supply line into clean bucket of fuel and test. Isolate engine from truck.cke, clausland, xsetra and 1 other person Thank this. -
Some filters that cross reference to the Fs1000 do not have the ainti siphon stand pipe. Some do not.cke and blairandgretchen Thank this. -

That check-valve was designed to slow down drain-back during a filter change and nothing else. You can take a brand new check-valve and blow backwards through it. I can almost guarantee you there is wear inside the pump allowing the drain-back issue you describe, personally seen it many times.
