Restarting CAT 3406B Sitting for a year

I am moving my truck to another mechanic. It has been sitting for a year. It has a CAT 3406B. It is a 1981 truck.

The truck was running and driving when it was parked.

The truck is new to me.

Do I need to do anything to the fuel? Polish it (clean it)?

I am not sure when the fuel filters were last changed.

Anything else I should watch out for? The batteries are charged.

The truck is being moved to another mechanic 3 miles down the road who has more time to work on it. I need to have the transmission removed.

 

1) Thanks for the information on water in the fuel. My hunch is I should buy some of that paste that you put on a stick and dip it in the fuel?


2) Now that you mention it, it has sat more like two years. I bought it in June of 2020. And, it was sitting for 6 months (?) before I bought it.

We drove it down the road from the PO one mile to load it onto the hauling truck. No problems during the drive.

Then my mechanic drove it into his driveway and there it has sat.

My mechanic then got too busy to do heavy equipment work--he is a regular automobile mechanic, and so I am moving it to another guy to pull the tranny.


3) The transmission started going out on the PO and so they parked it. It is popping out of 7th gear (the highest).

They could not find parts to repair the transmission and so they listed it for $5000 on CL.

I spoke with my transmission mechanic before buying and he said he was familiar with the Spicer 7-speed. He said he was pretty sure he could get parts for the transmission.

My transmission guy said $1000 to fix 7th gear or $2000 just to rebuild the whole thing.

I bought the truck for $1500.
