Why There Should Not Be Governors

A stainless spread axle reefer doesn’t scream “governed truck” to me.

 

I want to agree with you. But the general public is going to keep on being clueless no matter what the trucks do. Raising their speed won’t change that.

 

Had nothing to do with governors, and everything to do with that douche in the right lane not backing out of it for two seconds.

Totally agree! I drive a governed truck (65mph), almost always slow down a bit when another truck is passing me, especially when they are backing up traffic. Even when it's some idiot driver who shouldn't be passing me in the situation to begin with. IDK, most times it makes sense to pass another truck if you want and can go faster, but, sometimes best for everyone to just hang back behind for a bit. Really annoying to me are the folks who pass going only 1/2 mile faster and just creep around me backing up traffic for miles and seems like they could care less when I know they could go faster (ie. In CA with a speed of 55. I'm doing around 59 to 60 and they're gonna pass me doing 59 1/2 to 60 1/2. C'mon man, don't tell me you're governed at 60 1/2! speed up, get around me and quit playing games.

 

My favorite are when you are stuck behind a guy who keeps speeding up and slowing down, you finally move to pass them and get half way around and they wake up and speed back up. Had JB do that to me today, he was still slightly slower then me and We were in three lanes so I finished the pass. If they want to drag it out like that they usually end up tailgating me after I move over if you catch my drift.

 

And then, as soon as they clear your bumper, they cut you off with 10 feet to spare.

I have PassSmart, which gives me an extra 2 MPH over my 65 governed speed. (Up to 30 minutes per day.)
Even with that, I will not pass someone that is going at 64-64.5 unless I have no traffic coming up.

1/2 MPH gains me exactly what in a driving day?
A couple minutes at best, if I or the truck in front of me does not pull off sooner.
And if my schedule is SO tight that I am worried about a minute or two of driving time, I am not planning my trips very well.

 

And yes, there are those that choose to drive slower than the speed limit, and what they can do, and then speed up as you are passing them.

So often I am coming up on a truck going 60, when I am going 65, and I go to pass them.
Suddenly they are matching my speed as I am next to them, sometimes pulling ahead.
If I fall back behind them they are going down to the same slower speed, and then block me when I try to pass again.
What is with that?

That extra 2 MPH is handy if they are also governed at 65 and don't have it.
And then I notice that they slow back down again once I have made the pass.

Same. The only time I don't back out of it is when it's just the two of us, and I know he's fine. If he's over there with a car behind him, I let him by. Drop 5mph, he blows past, traffic resumes, and sometimes the guy is paying attention enough to know I did him a solid, and he hits the interrupt. Maybe he'll even pay it forward later.
