Company reefer driver here getting paid salary. I've noticed that I've been sitting at the docks a lot more than usual during this alleged "labor shortage". I was wondering how o/o's have been surviving. I rang my buddy who just left the company to purchase his own truck. He was telling me it's only a "little bit more" than what I make. I take home $1,175 a week as long as I stay in the truck available for a load.

    How have you been doing?

Watch YT, there are plenty of o/o peeps bragging about the home take lately)

PS: sitting, actually laying, at the dock is "break/sleeper", not waste. Unloaded and ready to go, the longer, the better)

Your friend is right is only a little bit more. How ever. When the rates go down it coulb be significantly to just a little bit less. While your pay will stay the same.
I can't speak for every one. But when I ran produce for 2.5 years as a company driver. I just factored wait time into the equation. Do u run coast to coast?

This really is a loaded question, with hundreds of different answers, any where from $1,000 to $5,000 a week after expenses. Depends on how lazy someone is, equipment, what trailer, write offs etc

currently my run is less then 10 hours by the time i leave the house to the time I’m home, and burn about 170 gallons of fuel a week, I also would rather spend the money on my business vs giving it to the government, that’s why I’m changing 8 air bags On the truck next week instead of just 2, and zipping a new set of steers on and saving my current for trailer tires, and a bunch of other things.

someone may stay out all 168 hours a week and burn 170 gallons a day and pocket all their money which will have different numbers

Exactly. I'll write myself into a NOL to avoid paying the Feds a dime.

or I’ll just work less, while the truck always runs profitable, life is too short to live in a 60” box for weeks on end, some may disagree and make double the money I do by living in the truck and that’s ok too if that’s what you want, but I don’t.

can’t take too much time off though or I start getting myself into trouble….

Not only o/o are not "surviving", I would say 2021 was the best year for trucking companies in probably decades.

If an owner operator is “barely making more than a company driver” while in the midst of some of the best times in trucking since deregulation, they need to get out of business or seriously re-evaluate their business model and freight. If someone can’t make it now, they will never be able to.
