what happens if someone goes through school and training in another state than the state you reside in?

I live in Tennessee but did my training in Kentucky. Upon graduation, do I get a CDL-A from Kentucky, or does the school/state/etc. give the new driver a document to return to your home state to get the license processed? Especially since I don’t have an address in Kentucky unless Motor Court Inn counts as a residence.

    How does this work?

You can only get your CDL where you officially reside. Multiple proofs of residency are required.

Why don't you ask your school this question. Many schools will allow you to use their address to obtain your CDL, then tell you to change it to your home state when you get back home.

Can you share the name of these schools and what states they are in?

Latter 1998, CDL Driver Training School, Goodlettsville, TN., acquired a TN CDL. Changed it to a NC CDL, no problem.

So the state allows the school to verify resident status or issues a license to a non-resident? This baffles me.

    Resident status is easy.
A receipt from a extended stay motel and received mail is acceptable in most states.

That's not true though. The Feds dictate what's acceptable and it's extensive. There's like 3 separate pieces of the puzzle that must be found to establish residency. I've lived in over 4 states in the past couple years and they all required the same information due to Federal demands.

They won't give you the license in KY. You will go to the driver's license bureau in TN. The documentation will have been uploaded from the school and the license will be issued. I did my training in TN, but got my license issued in MS. This happens ALL of the time. It will all be good.

My state doesn't accept those a proof of residence.

State of TN acceptable proof of residence documents.
    • Current utility bill including telephone, electric, water, gas, cable, etc. (includes “bundle” packages. Wireless telephone bills cannot be accepted.)
    • Current vehicle registration (personal vehicle not company vehicle) dated within the last 12 months.
    • TN vehicle title showing TN address (can use a title or vehicle registration as proof but not both).
    • Mortgage papers – such as the property deed or mortgage payment coupon/book
    • Copy of Lease Agreement or Contract with notarized signatures OR accompanied by signed realty agency letterhead confirming lease validity.
    • Voter registration card – NOT the application for voter registration.
    • Military LES papers listing Tennessee as home of record.
    • Current filed Internal Revenue Service tax return-Not tax return booklet.

Unacceptable documents include:  Bank statements
     Wireless telephone bills
     Credit card statements
 Utility connection or deposit receipt
     Employer letters
    Extended stay hotel receipts
 Magazine subscriptions or junk mail
 Personal or business postmarked mail
     Prescription bottles  USCIS identity documents (i.e. I-551, I-766, Visas, etc.)
 Hunting, fishing or boating licenses
Letters from a public or private school or educational institution
