New equipment ill always put something on there. If im picking up rental stuff or someones personal equipment. I always ask....no one ever wants it on there...

Have to watch on newer equipment a lot of them the pipe out of the aftertreatment module sits inside the stack and the bottom of the stack is open to the engine bay, so cool air can be drawn up and out the exhaust with the gasses. Kind of like the exhaust tips on a diesel pickup.

It is also comical if the string is loose and you start the unit and the sponge goes flying.

We cover all of ours as well as equipment we rent. It may not be at all necessary, but it only takes a minute and can't hurt. We use these:
