Downshifting, how can I learn how to do it?

I am definitely improving. Smooth, easy shifts mostly now.

But the downshifting to lower gears is still tricky. I took a ramp this morning to an intersecting road and truck broke.

Then it wouldn't reset into 3rd. There I sat yelling and cursing at my shifter, backing up morning rush hour.
