Stupid. Me too, except for the Rotella part. But I don't have anything bad to say about Rotella.

Fleetgard here. No reason other than it's what the truck has seen all its life, and the carrier I bought the truck from sells them to me at or near cost.

I do the same with oil. They did the changes for the first 400k so I'm letting them keep doing it.

Advanced Filtration Systems Inc., located in Champaign, was established in 1986 as a joint venture between Caterpillar Inc. and Donaldson Co. AFSI designs and manufactures high-efficiency fluid filters used in Caterpillar machinery worldwide.

You can’t go wrong with Donaldson.

You have me thinking now; last fall we changed out filters on one of our excavators because the fuel restriction light came on. We did not have Cat filters on hand grabbed some Napa filters to get by. After a day or so of running the hoe started intermittently losing rpm running poorly. I thought we would have to have a tech come out and diagnose the problem but decided to change out the filters back to Cat just to eliminate that possibility. Sure enough that's all it was. I hadn't thought about the filters failing, just thought we had the wrong filters - until now.

Is it possible to cross reference part numbers and put Cat filters on? I know some may think it's sacrilegious, but Cat does have a good reputation.

It should be as it works the other way around (non-oem to cat). I just googled Cat fuel filter cross reference, and there are tons of charts to browse through.
