ELDs encourage unsafe driving when uncontrollable delays occur.

Now mileage pay is already a whole another topic that I could yammer on about, but nobody wants to open that can of worms either.

But yeah ELD opened up the world's eyes to what drivers actually go/went through on a daily basis. It forced change for the good.

The days of sitting at a dock for hours on end for free are largely over.

The 2 hour free minimum for a lot of company drivers still pisses me off though. It always has because I could always drop and hook in 1/4 that time. It should start based on being delayed beyond a drop and hook, IMHO. An hour that some do is better but still not good enough.

 

Back before E-LOGS when it was still paper there was four words that made it legal.. I heard them used many times ...... I'am out of hours
If drivers choose to run a legal book those words were golden and nobody I know of lost their job for using them...

Ohhh yahhh I memba! Memba starting out in the industry and making $45,000 in 2004, and then seeing that today's drivers are being paid the exact same amount 18 years later?

Ohhh yahhh I memba! Memba per diem, which netted you a little extra in your pocket at the end of the week, but cost you the ability to get a loan and got you way less in social security when you retired, ALL so trucking companies could charge you a 2 cpm "fee" for the "favor" they were doing you???

Yeah I'll never agree with the 34 hour thumb twiddler. That's hella long time to be bored.

Can't say I've ever personally been affected though so I tend to forget about it.

 

60 grand and up was basically unheard of back in the day. They paid you on HHG, not the time you had in. Nowadays you can put in for delay pay and such with proof of your whereabouts so they can't even question it. So if you're delayed at a shipper and can only get 200 miles in, you're not stuck only making 80 bucks that day or running illegal.

if you want to eliminate hos, then eliminate the crap drivers and the carriers who caused the hos to be created in the first place.

until then, learn how to work with the numbers … many thousands of drivers work without any or little issues under these regulations and this technology.


By the way … if you know bad weather is coming and you need extra time, just use adverse conditions HOS regulation.
