If they could do this and make it retroactive, I would never complain again and buy all of you a drink.

Yep, Trump's "tax cut" cost me 3 grand by taking away the per diem allowance deduction.

Truck drivers should be pissed. Larger families with several dependents should also be pissed with the disappearance of the dependent exemptions. And people who live in high tax states should be pissed about the removal of the state and local tax (SALT) deductions.

But hardly anybody is. That's the power of messaging. After all, it was a "tax cut." You little people should be happy.

I used to live in one of those states.

    Used to. ;)

I actually like the fact that people who live in these places and vote for their policies are now having to cope with the results of their decisions.

For all the "high income tax states are bad" folks, look at effective tax rates coupled with federally redistributed funds. Tennessee is considered a "low tax" state, but once you take into account sales tax and how much federal money Tennessee gets over what it pays in, Tennessee is in the top 10 states for taxation.

Back when I was in high school (mid 90's), an Illinois state rep from the Quad Cities area stood up in the state house and proposed a bill separating Cook County from the rest of Illinois. He argued he was tired of Chicago controlling the state and Chicago getting the 'lions share' of state resources. The bill was seconded by a Chicago representative who pointed out that Cook County gets back 78 cents of every dollar it sends to Springfield. He further pointed out that if the Chicago Public School system was separated from the rest of the state that within 3 years it's pension fund would be fully funded and with 5 it would be the best funded school system in the country. The rep from the Quad Cities promptly shut the f up.

My point is simple - taxes are the price we pay for civilization. There is no way North Dakota or Kansas could pay for their road system alone. Yet without North Dakota and Kansas, New York and California would starve. There is no way West By God Virigina could have afforded to rebuild US 35 into a truck friendly route. I'm happy for my Wisconsin tax dollars to support that project as in doing so, it supports the free travel of goods. And all this is before we start talking about Defense spending. Not to mention the overall tax burden is the lowest it's been for a half century.
