Bare in mind your talking shops that specialize in oil changes. They have everything from pits to drain systems that cut way down on time. In an actual repair shop with qualified people it’s going to be a little slower. They are set up differently. May not have a pit etc. however they do have a better trained eye. They also see this customer on the regular so any short changing is going to come back to them. If the grease worms eat something up the customer knows exactly whose ### to get if the same guy/shop does it each time. Again get what you pay for. You’ll never get that at a chain

Maybe. Places like TA and Speedco have pits and can have a drain/fill/grease done in like 30 minutes. That leaves an easy two (or more) hours of time the truck owner is getting billed for. They don't need to look for things to sell since they're already getting a couple hours of labor from the customer. They're essentially charging 3+ hours for .5. Shops and mechanics are where the money is in this business IMO.

I typically do all my own service and repairs, grease all zerks and go over everything with a fine tooth comb about every 3-weeks. However, oil changes I don't want to deal with the disposal of the oil and filters, so I started using Iron Maintenance. They do a free DOT on your truck if you want with each PM and they are quick. You can schedule an appointment on line or just show up. So far, they have been the best to deal with and very fair on the cost. The fact I can get it done when home (Portland, OR area) or on the road at many locations makes them even better. The most recent PM was Delo 400 xl with fleetguard filters, oil and fuel. $367.55 ($50 off special if not done in an hour). $50.25 for a DOT on my trailer. AND they even cleaned up any mess underneath which is more than I can say for most others. In September they did a PM on my differentials with full synthetic for $250. It would have been difficult to do this myself for the price paid considering my time, gear lube and disposal. Costs most likely vary according to local market but I have to imagine better than most. Honestly, I have been so frustrated finding a company that I feel like I can trust and get it done in a timely manner, that every experience I have had with them has been positive. Once you are on their mailing list, specials get sent out that you can take advantage of.
This sounds like I work for them but don't, nor am I receiving any promotional consideration from them. I am simply done doing business with companies that make it difficult to do business with them, take advantage of the market situation or simply don't care, and will promote all companies that from my experience rise above all others.

I’m a one man show, just a couple of trucks. For my operation it’s more trouble than it’s worth. No one around the shop through the week when the tank needs filled, the space it takes up in a tiny shop to begin with at 50x60. I don’t disagree it’s easier and cheaper habits are hard to break

Dealer I worked at allowed 2.5 hours for full PM2 service.

Fleet shop allowed 2-3. However they were nut and bolt inspections. Front to rear.

For owner ops that wanted a complete service, was just clock time. But we included the normal up charges in that. Clutch adjustment was just part of a service, not a up charge.

My truck, I can do a oil change and grease tractor and 1 trailer in a hour. If I'm in a hurry. I have also strung a full service out 3 days tinkering. I dont care its my truck, my shop. You not broke down in your own garage or driveway.

2 of the cheapest items/insurance. A barrel of oil and a keg of grease.
