Hello I am a First Robotics coach for a grade school in St. Louis, MO. The students are tasked with an innovation project and they chose to work on improving the aerodynamics of semi truck and trailer combinations. The team created a 7 question survey regarding fuel economy and design cost. They would love any input from the industry. Thank you for your time.

I might do this if a mod verifies it’s legit.

I looked over the survey before I approved it. I didn't sign in to actually take the survey because I don't like giving out my email or any other personal info. Everyone has a different comfort level with stuff like that, though, so members are free to make that decision for themselves.

If anyone would rather answer on this post here are the questions, and I can tallie the results seperately.

On a scale of 1 to 5. 1 be not very, and 5 being extremely. How important to you is consuming less crude oil? *

On a scale of 1 to 5. 1 be not very, and 5 being Extremely. How important to you is getting better fuel economy?

If you have the option, would you want to gain .35 mpg? *
    Yes No

Would you be willing to spend $100 today to save $100 every year? *

Would you be willing to spend $5000 today to save $5000, and 5000+ gallons of crude oil every year? *

The average semi truck uses 21,000 gallons of fuel every year. Currently there is no better way to quickly deliver large quantities of freight to many different places on short notice. We are trying to increase a semi truck's fuel economy, saving at least $5,000 in 5,000 gallons of crude oil PER TRUCK per year. This will save the companies money and help the environment.

1+2) I'm neutral, the importance to using less diesel is to lower my cost per mile.
    3) yes I would like better mpg.

Yes to investing in my equipment to save (fuel) money.

Sounds like a great project for your students. Good luck

    Beancounting…

Not all of trucking is beancounters paradise. Much of the industry is actually performance based. Aerodynamics doesn’t help heavy haul 1 bit. Why not try to make a better performing engine/brakes/engine retarder/5th wheel/tires…stuff that’s actually useful to performance?

You are correct the concept will not work for everyone. The students are 7th and 8th grade, and redesigning an engine and/or braking system is a little over their head.

With current epa standards better engines are a dream. Pretty much sum up why I overhaul engines almost continuously at work.

The answer to everything is "it depends"

I genuinely dont care about saving oil, crude, oil or diesel itself.

i care about saving money, but if the cost of saving 250$ a month is to not do oil changes every month in favor of every other, im out. Preventative maintenance like that will save an engine from premature failure

Do i need to save 100$ every week by not idling/running a generator? Well... is it 10 degrees outside? Or 90? Not doing it.

Do i have to pay 15 bucks a night at specific places that may and may not have parking when i get there to plug in a heater/ac in order to save 25 bucks a night? No, im not down, it limits how you run and cuts the bottom line way more than it saves

Are you selling some snake oil modification to a truck that may sorta possibly incease mpg .35 or is it a tried and tested item

    It all depends

The kids are working on an aero device to reduce air drag between the truck and the trailer. A tanker, reefer, flatbed, end dump, orspecialty trailer would not use the device. Only setup for dry van. The survey was just a generic survey for their project.
Results show that people dont think about oil consumption. They focus on the bottom dollar. Also if initial cost couldnt be recouped within a year the cost outweighs the need, and if more than 2 yrs the willingness to buy fall off to only 1/8 of those surveyed would purchase.
