While back I posted how I’d been fired from my one and only job in the trucking industry. All because they found out I had another offer and thought I was poaching their drivers. Well I had a few weeks off between jobs and worked for a small moving company owned by my girlfriends brother being paid under the table. While there I found that the company owner would sometimes have crew not show up and he’d use these gig apps to find workers quick when he needed them. So after talking to some of these gig app workers I found many of them did other gig apps for a living and so I have lunch with a few of them and learn what their doing and it’s actually pretty good money their making.
So to make a long story short I got registered to work on many of these apps and got good reviews. And have gotten enough work so that I’ve decided to hang up the keys. And at least put the commercial driving career on hold for a long while, hopefully forever.
Now these task apps I use I have to pay a percentage to the app, but I’ve gotten a lot of under the table work as a result. For example I used a task app and got a job trimming a guys trees in a very nice house in West Houston. I chatted with the customer and he’s this real nice Vietnamese guy and he tells me he loves the job I did and he has another property he’d love me to trim those trees and will I do it cheaper if it’s off the app and so sure if you’re paying cash better for both of us.
Now this isn’t for everyone and it’s probably not something I see doing myself doing forever, but after 21 years in the Air Force and having many rules to abide by, and then the almost 4 years in commercial trucking. I gotta tell you, I kinda feel like more free than I’ve felt since I was a teenager.
Making my own hours, no benefits but I’ve got Veteran bennys so this ain’t for everyone but it’s working well for me with my situation.
Thinking about going to online college like my oldest kid is doing. I’ll keep my CDL as a fallback, but if I never drive as a commercial company driver again that’ll be fine by me.

Good luck with your new venture.
With a pension and medical you are probably good to go in any endeavor you wanna try.bentstrider83, tscottme, Crusader66 and 5 others Thank this. -
Good for you, we need more people like you to give a giant middle finger to these companies, and succeed. Put ME on some GD list, will you. So the company fired a good driver on suspicions, and are willing to put a possibly unqualified driver in your place? I think you did the right thing. The down side is, there's nobody left to haul the mail,,,

Got 2 moves to do today, I’ll have both done in time to pick my youngest up from school. Then I drop her off and door dash for the dinner rush. This weekend I’m starting a new but interesting app gig. I’m dog sitting. Got a nice big yard. And many people are seemingly willing to pay someone to take their dogs in while they road trip for the weekend and I like dogs anyway so this should be interesting.

Yep, with all those gig apps you can make some decent money. One of my close friends started out with one of apps I think it was called “ Rabbit Task” doing minor home repairs, carpentry, lawn care. Just like you did he network and don’t really use apps anymore because he got so much work.
Honestly, I’m local driver and my company offers great insurance. Otherwise, I would be doing same thing. Most truck drivers I’m friends with don’t enjoy trucking anymore.MOBee, Shackdaddy, bentstrider83 and 2 others Thank this. -
good for you. i retired a few years ago, but now i am seeking some sort of "part time" work to keep busy and buy more guns and ammo..lol
maybe i'll look into this "gig" work too.silverspur, Shackdaddy and Crusader66 Thank this. -
When I was driving and wanted to have kids , I was planning to sell 4 of my 5 trucks and go back to driving just one .
then I tripped over a job at a nearby hospital on the maintenance staff.
Turned out it was good money and I enjoyed the challenge ,
and I was really burned out from babysitting four drivers while driving a truck myself
the new job was slightly less money but was 8-5 mon/friLast edited: Jan 14, 2022

If I were to leave where I'm at. Try to drive from home town? No way. Nothing pays. They want me to be their maintenance ministry. ... Was just thinking today. I'd be better off working the counter at Pilot.Shackdaddy and homeskillet Thank this. -
Sounds good. I'm glad it's working out for you. Please don't be tempted to not pay the IRS the real amount on all the money you make with or without the app. It works for a short time and then it will blow up our world. You probably are not taking that short-cut, but don't even consider it.
MOBee, Siinman and Midwest Trucker Thank this.
