This might be an option

Hi everyone. I wanted to get some feedback from a few people on here that have a lot of knowledge about this industry. So far all the questions I have asked have gained great feedback. My biggest concern about getting unit the industry so far has been the away from home situation, after looking at a few options I think this has become a great choice, working for a construction company and eventually buying my own dump truck/trailer might allow me to stay close to home and not drive 500 miles a day. I don’t have my cdl but talked to a few schools about signing up for classes and can start as early as the next 2 months. I have considered hot #### trucking and also working for a local company, all these seem to require me to be away for a couple days at a time. I have a young family and I am blessed that I can take a chance on a career change at the moment. I have no debt and can probably pay cash for a truck. Obviously I wouldn’t be buying anything before spending a few years in the industry and undertaking all the details involved. So my questions about this type of trucking are pretty standard questions. Is there a demand for this at the moment and also what type of money can I expect within the first few years, again money is not as important for the first few years but I would like to see if it’s worth investing the time and efforts hoping it will offer a reward down the road. What’s the best way to get into this side of the industry, school/job training? Thanks for everyone's amazing feedback and help while I try and figure out this part of my life. Stay safe.

 

I would also like to take a moment and thank Chinatown who is a member on here, I am absolutely amazed at the knowledge this individual has and how they are able to provide other members with information regarding companies and other important information. Absolutely amazing.

 

The funny thing is that I just got off the phone with a friend and he said the same thing, he said the maintenance and upkeep costs on trucks make it difficult to be a owner operator. Do you recommend school over a trucking company student program? I have no problem paying for the program I’m just curious which is better. Thanks

 

What continues to concern me about this career path is that I don’t know if I will find a local job after I complete the schooling, I also notice that most of these 80k plus jobs are otr. The members on here have so much knowledge and experience so I respect alot of the stuff mentioned on here. I have a good job but I want to eventually work in a less physically demanding job than my current job. I think this is a good option but I am concerned that I will not find that job and will need to spent time away from home. I also just got my cdl permit this week. I’m headed in the right direction. I am outside of Cleveland Ohio. What is end dumping? I have noticed a lot of people working for construction companies and excavating companies, is there money in that as a company driver or is it better to be a owner operator? Thanks for the information
