Hi, new member here. Looking to buy by first truck to convert to a mobile office. The one I'm looking at is a 2003 Freightliner FL60. It was a tool truck (Snap-on) in its previous life in California. It looks in great shape but has 27,600 hours and around 160,000 miles. I understand these trucks would be idling most of the day while customers peruse the tools, etc. So my question is . . . would you buy a used truck with 27,600 hours on it or would that be a huge red flag? I'm planning on getting it inspected at a Freightliner dealer but the number of hours worries me, even though everything else on the truck looks in great shape. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks

Original engine? If so its near the end of its life so count on rebuilding that soon.

Average speed of 6 mph for every engine hour most trucks are 35 to 45 mph lifetime meaning the hours on engine are equivalent to a 900,000 to a million miles on the average truck .

    160,000 miles ain't nuttin' honey.
    160K/18 = 8, 888 a Year = just a wee bit over 24 Miles a DAY at ALL days each Year.
Just a Speculation. Math Not Exact. Weekends Not Deducted.

    The Hours....uhhh.....NO!

Yeah, I seem to have read that calculation and its a bit scary. I guess its its been stationary most of the time there won't be much wear and tear on anything besides the engine, but I'm guessing its a huge cost to rebuild or replace one of those engines.

Yeah, mileage doesn't worry me at all but it's a ton of hours. Vehicle is just what I'm looking for (good shape, clean, no rust, etc.) but the hours do scare me. I don't know enough about these vehicles to know whether the engine is going to die 2 miles down the road after I buy it, or whether it will go another 160,000 without any issues. I was scheduled to get it inspected Monday morning at a Freightliner dealer but am I just wasting my money and time? Should I walk away now with 27,6000 hours on it? Or, could it be okay since it was never driver hard and still have lots of life left in it???

Any ballpark estimates as to what a rebuild would cost on a truck like this? We talking $5,000? $10,000? $20,000?
