in a passenger vehicle, use the clutch 100% of the time. car / truck trans are nothing alike.
the only manual trans car you shift without use of the clutch is one that has a faceplated gearset.
i am also in the market for a new vehicle to replace my dd. my fun cars have always been manual trans and my dd typically was whatever trans came with the cheapest/most reliable vehicle i could reasonably find. my current dd has 376k miles on it. inline 6 cyl engine & 4 speed auto trans have never been out of it.
