I am in the process of getting my California CDL Class C with Hazmat Endorsement. Just received the learners permit (passed General and Hazmat written tests) and submitted my info to TSA. I only want this certification to be able drive fireworks (in a placarded vehicle, most commonly a small Budget rental van) for some local companies that I am currently volunteering with. No driving with trailers, tanks, etc.

Next up is the actual skills road (driving test). I have found plenty of reference information regarding the pre-trip vehicle inspection but really no information on what the road test will involve?

I’ve been told for this specific classification I can drive my own personal vehicle for the road test. Is this true?

Has anyone done this and be willing to give me some details about the skills road test (or point me to somewhere to learn about what will be required)? Section 12 of the California DMV Commercial Drivers handbook lists some basic skills but a lot of them are for large vehicles towing trailers etc.

    Thanks

The road test (in PA) can be taken in a private vehicle for class C. Not hard at all. Just normal driving on a short loop from and back to the DMV. Be sure of the basics, like turn signals, stop signs/lines, traffic checks and such. Hazmat also entails proper RR crossing procedures as well.

If it's a class C, that's any normal car or truck so your personal vehicle should suffice. I can't imagine what would be different about a class C cdl driving test vs. a regular class C. The hazmat endorsement is not part of the driving test, so no changes due to that. Should be a piece of cake.

I didn't realize they make you take another driving test. Kind of figured the written test would be enough to upgrade an existing class C license.
