How do you find out how much power a engine is making? I looked at the DD13 on freightliners website and it says it makes anywhere between 350-505HP and 1250-1850lb ft.. I was looking at buying a early 2000's sterling for 10k with a C12, it says 350hp which I'm not sure if thats right at all, I plan on hauling fully loaded so I will most certainly need torque

It'll be on the valve cover/engine ID tag.

On something older it may have been uprated. Only surefire way to tell is to connect to the ECM and see what program is loaded into it.

If you want to know how much its putting to the ground, chassis dyno. You'll probably lose 75 to 100 hp in the drivetrain.

You can go into Ecm and check what HP is set at. To truly find out the alive HP in that engine, take it to a dyno

I would say torque is more important for pulling power. That's one reason the CATs engine always pulled so good. A 500hp cat could out pull a 500hp S60 Detroit. If someone wants lots of pulling power and liked Detroit Diesel then you would want the 16 liter they have today.

Cummins makes bigger block engine today that could pull like the Cat's. It hard to beat the pulling power of the cats but they also got like 5MPG

Yeah, torque is more important, but usually torque is never posted but Horsepower is, and usually higher HP models have more torque.

Someone did tell me that essentially all modern diesels are all electronically limited by the ECU, essentially you can take your truck/engine to any dealer that makes 1250lb ft and have it tuned to make the max rated power, I got no clue if thats true at all, especially for the C12. The 2000's sterling I'm looking at is a good deal but if it doesn't make good torque then not so much

10k these days can be recovered within a month. I'd get it, let it pull slower on hills and make enough to upgrade, then sell it and get bigger engine after.

I live in nebraska so hills are nearly non-existent here, but you are right, I could replace it, rather get 2 trucks and hire my relative though. 10k in a month sounds pretty lucrative though

Not always true. Sometimes they may require some hard parts (like turbo or injectors) in order to support the highest ratings.

The dealer may not rate the engine past the capabilities of the drivetrain either due to liability (or warranty in the case of new trucks).

A lot of manufacturers have updated their programs for a low NOx strategy on these older electronic engines as well.

I don't know.. last week was 14.5k gross, will see what full month will show, even though I run two weeks a month the most all the time.
