Power ratings on diesels?

It'll be on the valve cover/engine ID tag.

On something older it may have been uprated. Only surefire way to tell is to connect to the ECM and see what program is loaded into it.

If you want to know how much its putting to the ground, chassis dyno. You'll probably lose 75 to 100 hp in the drivetrain.

 

You can go into Ecm and check what HP is set at. To truly find out the alive HP in that engine, take it to a dyno

 

I would say torque is more important for pulling power. That's one reason the CATs engine always pulled so good. A 500hp cat could out pull a 500hp S60 Detroit. If someone wants lots of pulling power and liked Detroit Diesel then you would want the 16 liter they have today.

Cummins makes bigger block engine today that could pull like the Cat's. It hard to beat the pulling power of the cats but they also got like 5MPG

 

10k these days can be recovered within a month. I'd get it, let it pull slower on hills and make enough to upgrade, then sell it and get bigger engine after.

 

Not always true. Sometimes they may require some hard parts (like turbo or injectors) in order to support the highest ratings.

The dealer may not rate the engine past the capabilities of the drivetrain either due to liability (or warranty in the case of new trucks).

A lot of manufacturers have updated their programs for a low NOx strategy on these older electronic engines as well.

 

I don't know.. last week was 14.5k gross, will see what full month will show, even though I run two weeks a month the most all the time.
