That's a common misperception among people incapable of being able to listen from distances greater than 5 miles.
Those of us capable of listening to other drivers at distances greater than 60 miles know otherwise.

Using a resonant antenna makes it much easier to hear greater distances.
    SWR meters are completely useless.

That's a really bad practice on his part. I never, ever, ever get out of the truck without my second key in my pocket and my phone on me. I can't do it. I feel for them every time. I've thought about this a lot. You get out at a rest area and run in for a quick second and come back and your truck is gone. Without a phone what are you gonna do? Same with keys since my main key is in the ignition almost always, second key in pocket. Third key hidden under rig.

That's my policy too, never get out of the truck without my phone.

And speaking of the truck being stolen, I don't worry too much about it now but when my dog was riding with me, I slipped a padlock through the u-joint in the steering column every time I got out of the truck.

The truck was insured, but I'd have used a cordless, long distance hole puncher on someone for driving off with my dog.
