Searching for opinions on a truck

    I'm interested in pulling a side-dump in state but would like the option to do some reefer/dry runs out of state and back when aggregate hauling gets slow. My questions, is there a combination spec'd truck that could work for both instances? Is this even a good idea? I realize that if it is spec'd more for hauling 85,000lbs the mpg won't be as good as an otr spec'd truck. Would it be better to just have 2 different trucks? Could I have a truck sitting not moving without insurance? If so could the insurance be transferred from truck to truck?

    I hauled 120k gross on a 40k airliner 3:42 rears for years. Spec how you want and replace parts when they wear out. Good thing about trucks, there made to be rebuilt.

    If you looked for something a little beefier than a typical highway tractor with an aero hood/sleeper but no side skirts or low bumper. Could probably strike a decent balance. Low gearing in the rear end helps for soft ground so you'd probably be best with a 13 or 18 speed.

    You'll need to keep both trucks insured/tagged. If you decide to run two of them keep that extra expense in mind as well.

    What AModelCat said. Get yourself something like a T800 Kenworth or one of the more aerodynamic Petes with no sideskirts or plastic bumpers. Something like a Freighliner is going to develop a lot of rattles and vibrations in the abuse of off road or semi off road you'll see pulling a side dump.

    Thanks guys. This info will help. I was thinking of a Pete 386, 379 or the KW T800 but I wasn't sure about the gearing in the rears. But anyway thanks again.
