Traffic on I40 west in New Mexico is completely stopped right now. Google Maps is telling me to exit and travel on Route 66. But is this safe for 18 wheelers? Thanks for your answers in advance.

There is current I-40 ROAD CONSTRUCTION in N.M.

As to Rt. 66 Being Truck Friendly, I've Found No Information. The Above Link Doesn't Supply Much, IF ANY, Related Information.

@Davidbenjamin--you don't say where you are, where you're trying to get to, or what exit you are near/just past...so it's difficult to offer alternate suggestions for you...

Looking inside my Rand McNally trucker's road atlas--it shows nothing paralleling I-40 in NM that is STAA-approved.

If you offered more info....maybe someone could help or give an alternate route suggestion. :(

Between Iyanbito, and Continental Divide - I believe, Rt. 66 doesn't exist as a 'side road' - it is I-40.

If Google maps with traffic overlay is correct, that's where you're stuck at I'm guessing.

Looks like EB is shut down, I'm guessing you've got slick roads and wrecks.

If west-bound: Google Maps traffic overlay shows that traffic on Route 66 is also slow/snarled at/near Thoreau (exit 53).

Past that exit, I-40 opens back up (if west-bound).

East-bound in that same area is apparently a TO-TAL MESS.

    Hope this helps....

I'm headed west on i40 in New Mexico near mile marker 60. Going to Holbrook AZ then Cedar City UT. Traffic was moving, but now it's stopped again. Looks like my only option is to wait it out.

I was trying to figure it out too. I stopped at sky city casino to gamble while that mess clears.

As of this writing--latest look at Google traffic overlay shows that you are probably best off to wait it out, unfortunately. :(

Route 66 in that area looks no better.

FWIW--in case you haven't done so, already--some GPS navigation devices (designed specifically for CDL truck use), when combined with their traffic-update feature, will warn you of such traffic backups/clogs LONG BEFORE you get to them--and even offer alternate route suggestions. This tech combo saved my bacon & lots of time/late deliveries....back when I was "over the road".

You might look into that later....as time allows.

    Start out looking at Garmin.

As said - hit the traffic overlay tab on Google maps and check destination delays and weather before you go.

we would regularly drop 287 to Abilene and run 20 and 10 to CA in the winter when it got bad. Longer miles but beats sitting.

I40eb at a standstill for like 15mi. wb clump cleared and then they all raced together to az 351, where they decided to clump together again for what I’m assuming is a 1 lane construction zone.
