There is a really old saying that goes like this..."A motorcycle is the last present you will buy for your kid."
Both of my sons know that they will buy their own bike or car! I'm not ready for either of them to be hurt of killed until they learn from the best there is and that's ME!

My boy wants a bike mainly for just getting around to college, and visiting friends, we don't have a car so he has to travel by bus or subway all the time. We are talking city suburbs, average journey for him is around 5-7 miles, so no open roads. (Yet !)
I believe he is sensible enough to do this.
He was cycling to school with me aged 4, pedalcycle, and has also spent a lot of time driving boats with both diesel and outboard engines, so I feel he is able to understand both road skills and the control of the engine.
And roshea - thanks for the advice about community college, we will look into that. I already got him a DVD about biking skills so a 'real' course should help as well.
I'll start looking out for the Suzuki SV650, thanks for the suggestion.
Thanks guys for all your ideas, I really appreciate it!! -
20 years in the dirt ! Currently have an 08 KTM 250 E/XC and an 04 YZ250...pinger 4 life !! No more motocrosss for me, I was never any good anyways. Those guys that spanked me week after week so many years ago are long gone by now and I know for a fact I was having more fun. Seriousness has a purpose if your an aspiring pro but I was just looking forward to next weekend. Nowadays my friends and I trail ride two or three times a month and occasionally camp out but I usually opt for heading to the home 20 when it get's dark due to being out on the road during the week. It's hard to beat being at home.

NOPE! Hwy 60 to I24 at Paducah then hammer down on the slab! I had to out run a rain storm going by the big scales and I had it going pretty good and when I got into TN past Nashville it was drive 80 or get my arse run over!
Heck 60 is "almost" 4 lane now but only a few 2 lane sections left in Missouri but in KY it's all 2 lane but I rarely had it below70 the whole trip except crossing the Mississippi behind a worried 18 on those oh so wide bridges! I passed him while still on the bridge coming into KY before the scales. In fact the slowest I did was there at Cairo, Barlow and Paducah except for my gas stops. I almost broke my Ironbutt record if it had been a 1000 mile trip instead of 673 miles total.
Now if I can do a 100 mile with out a break I'll be doing good! Freaking cancer will screw up your body! LOL. That's why I want to do 1 more trip so I can do the "Tail" and N. Ga one more time! -
oh, those 1000 mile daze on the scooter. I'm past the point of enjoying that much anymore though the r1100rt eats 'em up.
-
I can only do about 500 miles a day max but I also spend most of that time at hyperlegal speeds hanging off the thing.
-
the r1100rt will haul ### in a straight line and all you do is stop for gas every 200 mi. But I don't feel like doing that anymore. I load everything in the trailer, road bike, trail bikes and just go leisurely on my way. As in this trip report: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=456818

My wife and I are avid m/c tourers. Becky rides a 1300 V-Star Tourer and I ride a Royal Star Tour Deluxe.. When we're on the scoots we stick to the roads less traveled and avoid the big roads at all costs.
