    Hi everyone!

I just wanted to know if anyone else has the same answer/thought to what one of my old school trucker friends has told me about this.

So I got my Class A CDL in September of 2021. Got my Doubles/Triples, Tanker, and TWIC Card. I took the test for my HME before the rules changed regarding having to take a class, but I did the TSA Background after the rules had changed. Does this mean I was grandfathered in to the old rules? My buddy said that I was.

Much appreciated for any answers that can help answer my question!

I would assume that you are, but the only way to know for sure is to check with your local DMV.

Yes you are. I took the test and the tsa before the rule change, however it took 60 days for tsa to come back. It came after the rule change. One lady said I wasn’t grand fathered in, but her boss called the main office and they said I was. Push back if they try to say otherwise.

Appreciate it, Driver. I didn't know how long it takes either, so thanks for that answer too. I did my TWIC Card prints the same day and already got an email saying my TWIC Card has been mailed out and I should get it within 5 to 15 business days. HME is a lot longer!

So if you want to add hazmat now you have to take a course. Even if you’ve had a cdl for 30 years …?

If you've never had Hazmat then I know you have to take a course. Not sure if you have to IF you previously had Hazmat and don't now. But if you have had a CDL for any amount of time and never had Hazmat, then yes you have to take a course unfortunately. It's stupid.

That's good! The new law took place I believe on February 7, 2022. It was very recent, so that would be why nothing was said because you already have it

Your idea of "grandfathered" differs greatly from mine. I got my chauffeurs license in 1978, and for 35 years, aside from a couple written tests, never took any kind of other tests. I failed my HazMat everytime I took it, and finally said, "Up yers", the HazMat didn't pay any better so I just refused those loads. I am guilty of hauling HazMat and throwing the placards under the bunk, short distances, I don't recommend that today. At the time, I figured a placarded trailer , you may as well walk around with your zipper open, just asking for trouble. I took a chance and blended in, and never got caught. Again, CB radio, in case any "surprises".THAT,,was a "grandfathered outlaw", and sadly our time has passed, but it was a heck of a toboggan ride while it lasted,,,Best of luck,,
