Nebraska should be ashamed of itself

a truck driver that complains about nebraska needs to get sent to the northeast for a couple weeks straight. NYC to Boston and back everyday... he'll be happy as hell to see that welcome to nebraska sign after that... last time i was in nebraska my clutch went out and it was like 0 degrees everyday while holed up in the hotel for a week ... but nice people for sure.. the truckstops are pretty nice too.

 

There’s actually a rest area just outside of Boston that, seemingly, nobody uses. Also there’s some prime parking on the cross Bronx expressway 6 feet off of 95! Always see some trucks parking there if you know what spot I’m talking about lol

 

i can count on one hand how many times ive been up thru there... my buddy called me one day and asked where im at, said im on the george washington headed to jersey.... jesus dude did ya fall off the deck and hit your head or what ?

 

These drivers must only drive in the daytime saying there is no issue in big ole Nebraska. For as big and wide open as the land is you would think there would be more parking. This is also the state that puts these tall barricades with reflectors on shoulders to prevent parking. The person mentioning the NE like its some warzone, we know already.

 

definitely not, I haul reefer. I finish when my days over It’s easy to park in Nebraska.

Well, let's review.
The original concept of a "safety " rest area directly adjacent to the right of way of any given Federally funded interstate highway was for a "short" break for the drivers to refresh themselves, and a convenient location to meet natures call and maybe a short nap.
I define short as less than 2 hours in duration, averaging far less in most cases.

They were never intended to be used overnight for vehicles on the automotive or truck side of the parking area. Indeed, almost all rest areas when originally installed in the 1960's when I started driving had specific signed prohibitions about the practice.
Now they are being used as temporary truck terminals or borderline homeless encampments(people living in cars)
Some states have decided to expand the number and size of rest areas, and use their portion of matching Federal highway funds for that purpose, instead of say keeping the pavement maintained, bridges replaced or additional lanes to the highway network. It is a zero sum game.

If you have a beef, it is not with the taxpayers of the state of Nebraska who have made that choice.
It is with NATSO, The National Association of Truck Stop Operators, who have through their lobbying efforts have prevented, for more than 50 years, any number of private corporations(at their expense) from developing huge fully equipped travel plazas (think Ohio Turnpike) that have direct access to the right of way of the interstate highway.

They did not want their members to have to compete with those more logical locations and so they don't exist.
