I need your help putting my mind at ease. I know there's tons of methods and variety of equipment but I mainly use either a 2" wire hook end strap to hook into the chassis or lasso with O ring to strap through the wheel (with protective layer), help me with what I got.

The latter is also used around or over the wheel but it just makes me cringe when I see what it does to the tire. Aside from the previously mentioned, I don't feel safe with it rocking back and forth (unless pulling opposite direction).

My problem with hooking chassis is that - can't be done with all cars, especially lower vehicles and it doesn't allow vehicle to rest on suspension for smoother ride on trailer. Pulling down on the chassis and going over a nice bump at highway speeds would jerk the trailer and truck.

The lasso through the wheel - many say that this is a huge no no but from what I understand most wheels have a pretty high load rating, I know this is load so it may not apply.

Lasso over tire - hate what it does to tires and I feel it'll come undone (mainly the tire cutting issue).

I know these may not be perfectly at 10 & 2.

Tell me what you do, why you like it, what's your preferred strapping method...
These are not all that tight, I didn't squeeze the juice outta them to make a point.

Belt around the tire isn’t a problem, but where that’s tied to the deck is. I would have tied off on the stake pocket between the tandem on the front, and the spool behind the tire on the back. You want to pull down on it as much as you can. Your aim with load security is to drive the friction factor up to the point the piece doesn’t move. Something like a big coil or crawler tractors only have to move about a 1/4” before it’s got enough energy in it to part 3/8” chains like overcooked spaghetti and land on the ground. With chains, belts or cables you want to keep them as short as possible. You get more effort on the load that way, and everything stays tight longer.

Let me see if I get this. I appreciate your feedback right off the bat. So basically the longer the tie the worse, I'd want to keep a close leash? The reason I did the long throw was to pull the front wheels back and the back -> towards front so avoid back and forth movement.

Reason I don't use the spools it cause it just don't seem to lock well with these double J hooks. This strapping was done for testing purposes, I've never actually driven anything like this.

    Still concerned about the tires.

The shorter the strap/chain, the better, more strength put in less feet of space.

Don’t worry about the tire. What the belt is doing is nothing compared to what happens to it when it hits a messed up frost joint at 65. Tie downs on a vehicle you usually want to pull opposite directions on both ends. Whether it’s off the ends or to the middle doesn’t matter much. You just want the majority of the effort to be down as opposed to fore and aft. But yes, ideally you want to be tied as short as possible. Sometimes you have to work with next best, chaining around other freight for example. Like I said it doesn’t matter if we’re talking chain, cable or a belt short is best. Chain especially, the longer it’s stretched out the more weight you have suspended, and the more it vibrates and works. The more you have strung out the harder it is to keep tight. A short chain even will work loose pretty quick if you have 45lbs of slack chain wrapped around the binder wobbling around. Tie that off someplace else if you can.

Now wants so wrong with strapping through wheels?

Appreciate all your input, trying to learn as much as I can to be as safe as possible but the people near me, the ones supposed to be passing down the right info are total idiots.

I usually leave it for less fancy wheels, such as steel or other than aftermarket aluminum. Bigger trucks I do chassis but the jerks and suspension rebound are felt on the truck and trailer. Not a fan.

They probably only had 2 chains .
I realize I’m giving them undeserved benefit of the doubt by saying that, lol.

Had to think a bit but I came up with something to say. What’s going on there is just wrong in too many ways to describe so I’m not even going to start. But am I weird in thinking the one in all this that needs a sharp slap to the skull is whoever sent those 2 to load coils?
