Not everyone wants to own a truck. There are a lot of really good drivers who are more than content to just drive somebody else's truck and they make a good living at it.

Leasing a truck from Ryder is very expensive, and NOT a good business plan for a one person show.

Plenty of drivers stay company driver their whole career. I'd say a majority of CDL drivers are never Owner-Op. Compared to being a company driver, Owner-Op is like doing 2 or 3 others jobs, on top of driving the truck, and getting 1.5 times the pay and all of the hassles. Some of us don't want to think about the truck 24/7/365/40 years.

I know several drivers who are happy to earn $75-100k and let someone else worry about the repairs and fuel costs and finding the loads etc .
My neighbor made $76k last year driving someone else’s brand new W-900 , home every weekend hunting and fishing and building his hotrod , instead of working on a big truck and doing the accounting and taxes and invoices etc .

nothing wrong with being a company driver .
Nothing wrong with being an owner op ,
But you have a lot to learn .
There simply isn’t enough profit to buy a truck And pay a driver.
Not for a small operation with just a few trucks .
Unless you have your own freight contracts .
If you’re gonna be working off of a load board , the profit just isn’t there .

I said in the near end, which means the immediate future.
With fuel costs going up, truck prices going up and new trucks getting harder to find... how much sense does it make to be in a hurry to buy your own truck right now?

And I did get into trucking with the intention of staying a company driver.
I have no desire to own my own truck, but I do like driving one and doing the job.

    homeskillet and Chinatown Thank this.

well im 26 and just getting started with my own authority.. so if i can do it you can as well. but i would recommend taking baby steps to get there. go from company driver to leasing on with a company as an owner op. its a much easier transition to go from owner op to own authority than it would be to go from company driver to own authority. i couldnt even imagine doing it that way, maybe unless you have some close friends or family in the business there to guide you .
