    Hello,

I need a 5 Mill insurance policy, an insurance rep gave me a quote for 70k / year in California. That seems a bit steep or is that the going rate? If you pay less would you share who gave you that quote? I have dedicated freight already hauling class 8 liquids in plastic totes up and down California. Just need a reasonable insurance quote.

    CAXPT Thanks this.

Well, in another thread, someone getting their own authority was just saying that just for general flatbed O/O it was going to cost him 17k a year just for I think 1 mil and the other requireds, and he had 25-27k quotes, and he's only doing regular freight, so considering you're in CA and Hazmat and 5 mil, that may seem a bit high, but maybe it isn't. Shop around if you think it is, you might be happy for that one. :)

I’m a student. I have heard that drivers should get three years experience before going on their own truck because insurance will be to high.

Insurance (especially with hazmat) will probably be high your first year as an O/O regardless of how much prior experience you have as a company driver, but the less experience you have the higher your rate will probably be.

Plus, you need to really learn the segment of the trucking business you wish to go into before you make the jump from company driver to owner-operator.

I know the post is old but you should give OOIDA a call. They can give you a list a mile long of insurance providers. Then you start hittin' your phone's keypad.
