Texas Workforce. Check with them about programs that will pay for your school completely. Your criminal record will qualify you for those programs. It’s alot of hoops to jump to jump thru but doable.
That’s how I got my license in 2012.

    Best of luck.

Edit. I see @Lunatic Fringe spelled it all out up there lol

Raider Express's website says they pay for classroom time and pay a $2500 completion bonus. I strongly encourage you to consider this option, because AFAIK most carriers don't start paying you until you get on the trainer's truck.

At least, that's how it was back when I was in driving school, although the company did furnish a motel room and 2 meals per day. But in over 20 years of driving this is the first time I've ever heard of a carrier that will pay you to go to class.

Also, keep in mind that if you team with someone you will be sharing a living and working space with them that's probably smaller than a prison cell. That constant proximity will magnify any little thing about the other person that bugs you, and vice versa. It's almost inevitable that tempers will flare at some point. Not trying to scare you off, just giving you a heads-up. Good luck.

Thanks for the ideas for employers. Now I wonder what about finding anyone who's interested in teaming though. Do newbies who want to team typically have to find their own teammates, or ask a carrier for a teammate? It looks like both things can be done at least sometimes. Which is more typical though? And I wonder if anyone would be interested in teaming, given the criminal record. I mean, I'm serious about staying on the straight and narrow, but I'm afraid it might be hard to find someone willing to give me a chance as a teammate.

And I still like the sound of places like Prime or Schneider over options like doing CDL training on my own. The difference between free CDL training and getting paid during CDL training is that only one of them pays the rent between now and when I actually start working. That's a big difference, and a deal breaker for me. I understand that places like Schneider aren't the ideal companies that experienced truckers think of. I'm looking to get into the trucking industry before running out of money, even if that means getting lower pay for awhile after starting my career as a trucker. And surely I'm not the only newbie going to that kind of company, if some of those companies are so large. Surely there must be some way to find someone to team with at a company like that if there are plenty of other newbies going there too.

I've heard drivers mention CRST before this thread too. I think I'll have them on my list of companies to check out.

For anyone reading this thread who's looking for someone to team with, and who has reservations about my criminal record, know this: I've spent years praying to God for a changed heart. I've been gradually seeing results of that, especially about 5 years after getting locked up, when I started getting a bunch of dreams that seemed to be influenced by God. But those dreams happened at least occasionally even earlier, like when I dreamed I was standing in a poor, one room hut with a dirt floor, looking out the doorway at trucks with flatbed trailers going into a town to set up for a festival. I just knew, "One day ... I will live in one of those." I wholeheartedly believe God is real and that He has the power to change people's lives and hearts. After getting out of prison I've been doing things like Bible study and some meetings with prayer. One lady asked God about me before I told her anything about myself, which led to her saying that I had placed myself on the path of blessing, and that I was determined to follow it. That's me exactly, determined to follow God's way. I will never say that my crime was ok, because it wasn't. But I know people can change when God's involved. These things are why ideally I'd like to team with a Christian. I'd like to team with someone who I can encourage in their effort to follow God's way, and I'd like to be influenced that way myself. If I can't find a Christian though, I'll team with some other driver. I'm determined to follow this path.

For rent money, go to free driving school 8 hrs a day, work 8 hours, sleep 8 hours. Weekends off. Probably more free time than teaming.
