So I'm curious on what VIN number they use to register a truck and determine the year it was made. Basically I want to get away from elogs, but I like the truck I have now at least the frame cab and sleeper. Its a 2007 Peterbilt 379 with a C15 Acert but I want a truck with a 5ek. So I guess I'm asking when registering a truck are they going off of the VIN on the cab, engine, etc...

Elog goes off of engine year. Legally you can not take your C15 out and throw a 5ek in, not to say it hasn't been done though. You can have a 2018 gliderwith a 5EK in it and not need an ELOG.

So you cant take a newer truck and put an older engine in but you can take a older truck and put a newer engine in?

So say I take a 359 and put a engine built before 2000 I'm good but if I put an engine newer then 1999 I'd have to run elogs then?

Exactly. My father has an 84 359 he put an N14 Cummins in. The actual swapping isn't that difficult as long as you have the proper wiring harnesses.

Well what title do you have?

If this is a 2007 truck where you have the components are the frame and cab, it is a legal 2007.

what you have to do is buy a different cab, a different frame and engine, put it all together and have it considered an assembled vehicle.

I don't know how it works on semis but It's probably similar to cars.

This is basically how it works.

67 and older are emissions exempt. Except maybe in California.
68 started exhaust sniff. And had the highest levels cut point. 70-74 were lower. 75-76. 77-80. 81 was the lowest.

The cat convertor came out in 75 or 76. Along with fuel neck restrictor and smog pumps actually started earlier.

As far as changing motors. It had to meet the emissions requirements for the year of the vehicle. Anything older then 74 didn't matter as it had no devices except maybe the smog pump. So you could take a new motor and put in a old car. If it failed. You only had to spend $100 and got a waiver if it couldn't pass.. But the newer motors ran cleaner then the older motors.

When the emissions devices came out. Those couldn't get a waiver if any of the devices were missing or inoperative. The older motors didn't require them and ran on leaded gas. Not good for the convertor.

People that installed older motors screwed themselves because they weren't designed for emissions. Now you got a worthless vehicle. Unless it passed for that year of car. Then they were golden.

84 became really strict. If anything was missing you were SOL from even getting a test until it was replaced and operable. People with Ford trucks were famous for taking their smog pump belt off. How they figured they got more power is beyond me. But the pump would freeze up without a belt. So now they needed a new pump and belt before they could get tested.

This is a truck forum and not cars but that gives an idea why it may or may not be a good idea to put an older motor into a newer chasis.

It's illegal to tamper with emissions and some states require emissions to renew the plate.

Now a glider could be done but sounds like their days are limited too.

Vehicles are registered off the VIN. Cab. Motors have serial numbers.
