Hey guys, I would appreciate help from this forum to export used trucks and trailers from Canada to US. I am aware about the EPA and DOT requirements, just want to know the best procedure for all of this. Should we contact a broker, registered importer? Or can we export by ourselves? Also what is the criteria behind the 30 days limbo at borders? Also are their any challenges with registrations in the states?
    Thanks in advance.

This sounds like a hornets nest.

Why you you export trucks from Canada to the USA? We have the same trucks available for purchase here.

They want to cash in on the inflated prices here, the great American buck is still better than the loon.

Availability mostly is my guess. Canada has less restrictions and terrifs in place on a lot of items that makes it cheaper and easier to bring in these vehicles and parts. This is likely going to make it much cheaper to buy the equipment there and ship it here for a profit. How much so and if there arent other restrictions that make up for it....i have no idea. I also know they have a lot of old iron sitting around they cant use up there for whatever reason that we would greedily gobble up.

We just want to be able to cater to a broader market, we have plans of opening a branch in the states sometime soon. Just want to be able to create a procedure for the export. We were using a broker earlier but had crazy delays with them.

Waay back Provost would buy or lease new trailers through the main office. These were used in international service and on the first trip needed to check with customs I believe to declare that it was eventually coming back into Canada.

Tankers require cleaning so the first trip ended at our NJ office -or- a cleaning location near Chicago so it was a few days before the new trailer would return to a boarder crossing with out any problems. I'm sure it all was handled in Montreal.

I’ve moved 30+ pieces of equipment from Canada to the US.

It is simple once you know but you are REQUIRED to use a registered Importer or else the US agents will turn you away.

You’ll also need an ACE manifest for every piece you bring across.

You can get training to do it yourself or you can pay the RI to do it.

The 30 day "quarantine" is only required when the door jam does not list "Vehicle adheres to all Federal US safety standards" or something close to or along those lines.

Here is the list of RI's to use.
    Registered Importers | NHTSA

Note, I phoned about 5 before I got one that would actually help me.

I use Rocky Mountain Registered Importers out of Great Falls, MT - Tiffany has been awesome for getting most of my stuff across.

Thank you for the detailed response, I gave Rocky mountain registered importers and spoke with Robin who informed me that the 30 days quarantine is mandatory and can not be skipped even if I have everything conforming which is contradicting what you mentioned which got me confused. Anyways, I am going to email them with details and get a quote from them and hopefully they can clear the 30 days confusion over the email. Thank you to you again
