We were about to go to Landstarve's flatbed training course a few years ago, then van took off.

The van gravy train is coming to an end now. Whilst flatbed and stepdeck are soaring.

If you can swing it, do it. Roll with the punches and go where the best rates are. Personally, I don't think open deck is doing so great either though. I haven't pulled a single load in over two weeks. It's pretty dead in my area. Plus the rates have dropped below what they should be considering the ridiculous price of fuel at the moment.

I also believe it’s too little too late to switch to open deck (where the allegedly soaring rates are considered, lol). But one should do what one desires. In the end we will all suffer together.

Step deck has been good for me this year as well as last year. I have not seen a drop in rates for most loads. I think if you are a resourceful person you can make step deck work for you and make good money. If you put the truck in a part of the country where rates are good and work out of those areas you should do just fine.

For what it’s worth, I got a buddy step deckin’ with Landstar he’s making it sound like he’s killin it. Him sending me this picture is the closest I’ve ever gotten to pullin an open deck, however… so I can’t be of much if any help.
