    Im not a driver yet but happened upon an ad in my local newspaper looking for independant contractors to pick up and deliver small aircraft parts (in my car or SUV) for $1.00 pr mile.I dont have the necessary licensing for this but wonder if that sounds like a decent pay scale.At that rate,my 20mpg SUV means I earn$18 per gallon after gas.Not sure what else I would need to do this.Anyone have any experience with this?Does the pay sound fair?After all the rates I have seen here for truckers,it sounds too good to be true and probably is.They are called "your way transport" and have a site by the same name.Thanks

    First thing to find out is if they are paying you in both directions or only in one. That cuts the income in half right away. Secondly, you need to find out what their vehicle requirements are. In many of these types of deals, there are specific requirements concerning the vehicle, it's age, and many other things. It's still commercial driving, driving for hire and you may need a license for doing so. You also may have to have insurance covering what you are doing.

    Outside of Domino's Pizza and newspaper routes, there aren't a whole lot of truly good deals for people to use their own car without running into a lot of regulations.

    Check into it, but do so with a severely skeptical view of things.

    Thanks Burky,always good to hear from experience.Im just biding the time and cant go for my CDL as yet.There is surely going to be some kind of permit,and workmans comp,then extra insurance but Ill bet you hit the nail on the head with the pay being for only one way.They said its mostly local but sometimes a few hundred miles,in which case,it aint worth it.I will check further and thanks again.

    Not sure it's terrible if it's loaded miles only. I don't think $300 to drive 300 miles, and back, is too bad in a small vehicle. It's not like you are driving a 6mpg tractor trailer unit.

    The problem comes about when it's 300 miles today, 50 miles tomorrow, 70 miles the next, 150, and so on. If I thought I could get 2500 miles a week at a buck per mile, in a cargo van, I would do it tomorrow. But in reading the expediters forums, this doesn't happen very easily.
